I’d say this misses the point by a mile. It’s not about free versus not free. The NYNO change and NWC’s challenges are entirely about *WHY* people should buy in.
I think you’re asking the wrong questions Tony. Let’s think and talk more about how both NWC and Nightowls can *thrive* and use less of our time worrying about how any of us survive. I’m the last person on Earth to suggest how we survive isn’t important. I just think it’s way more effective to do it without wasting any time being afraid of what happens when everything falls apart.
We can do that, as hard as it is, by focusing entirely on what makes us thrilled to be doing what we do.
Maybe it means a NYNO membership model that helps community members kick ass by leveraging their Nightowls involvement with other events; access to highly valuable people we can share with and learn from; or/and deals + services shared within Nightowls / NWC and from adjacent groups with shared values. Maybe it’s an opportunity to explore ways Nightowls and NWC can each make money beyond the memberships or the space…
To me it comes down to this: Coworking isn’t about renting desks or even space. NWC isn’t Sunshine for a big reason. It’s about recreating, re-envisioning, and yes even revolutionizing work. That’s why the new Citizen membership at NWC is brilliant, or why Loosecubes is heading in such an awesome direction.
I don’t think a wait and see approach with Nightowls is the answer. Does the current plan make any of us feel excited? (I sure don’t feel that way). Let’s keep at it until we hit on something that picks us all up a few notches.
